About Us: Our Story of Love, Lagos, and a Lot of Spice

Hello and welcome to Spoonful Snap! We’re David and Amina, and we’re so happy you’ve found our little corner of the internet. We think of this space as the kitchen of our hearts, opened up for all to share.

Our story began not over a candlelit dinner, but in the beautiful, bustling chaos of a market in Lagos, Nigeria. I’m David, I’m 32, and I remember seeing Amina (who is 30) for the first time. She wasn’t just buying yams; she was having a passionate, twenty-minute debate with a vendor about which one had the best soul for making pounded yam. I was instantly captivated.

She spoke about food with a language I’d never heard before—a language of heritage, passed down from her grandmother. For her, a recipe wasn’t a list of instructions; it was a story. And I knew I wanted to be a part of her story.

Our dates weren’t to fancy restaurants. They were spent in her family’s kitchen, my hands clumsy as she taught me the rhythm of grinding spices, her laughter filling the air, which was always thick with the scent of ginger, garlic, and roasting plantain. Food was never just food; it was our connection. It was how we built our life together.

A few years ago, we made the biggest move of our lives, coming back to the United States to start a new chapter. The quiet, orderly aisles of the American supermarkets were a world away from the vibrant energy of the Lagos markets we loved. In the pursuit of our careers, we started to feel a small part of our shared soul fading. We missed the flavor, the fire, the feeling of home.

So, we brought home to our kitchen. We started recreating the dishes of our childhood, not just for the taste, but for the memories they unlocked. The kitchen became our sanctuary again. It’s where we dance, where we are unapologetically ourselves, and where we add a little spice to everything we do.

Why “Spoonful Snap”?

We created this blog because we believe every meal should be an experience.
A “Spoonful” is a taste of our history, a bite of a memory, a flavor that tells a story.
A “Snap” is that moment of joy, captured forever. It’s the flash of inspiration when you try something new, the fun of playing with your food, the memory you make when you share a meal with someone you love.

This is our space to blend the bold, communal flavors of our African roots with the fresh, exciting ingredients of our American life.

Meet the Team

  • David (32): I’m the storyteller and the grill master. I’m obsessed with fire, smoke, and finding the perfect balance of flavors. If a recipe has a long, rambling story before it, that’s probably me.
  • Amina (30): She is the heart and soul of this kitchen. The keeper of her grandmother’s secrets, she has a magical ability to taste a dish and know exactly what it needs. She is the artist who makes every plate beautiful.

We’re here to show you that cooking isn’t a chore. It’s a celebration. We promise to share recipes that are vibrant and achievable, and stories that we hope will inspire you to create your own kitchen magic.

Thank you for being here. Let’s make something delicious together.

With all our love and flavor,

David & Amina
