Ingredients
Scale
2 large yellow onions
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon water
1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
Cooking spray (oil-based)
Instructions
Slice the onions into 1/4-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and place them in a bowl of ice water for 30 minutes. This step helps remove excess moisture and keeps them crisp. Drain and pat the rings completely dry with paper towels.
Set up your breading station: Place flour, salt, pepper, and paprika in a shallow dish (Dish 1). Whisk the eggs and water together in a second shallow dish (Dish 2). Place the panko breadcrumbs in a third shallow dish (Dish 3).
Dredge each dry onion ring first in Dish 1 (flour mixture), shaking off excess. Dip it into Dish 2 (egg wash), letting excess drip off. Finally, press firmly into Dish 3 (panko) to coat completely. Place the breaded rings on a wire rack while you finish the rest.
Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (195°C) for 5 minutes.
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Arrange the onion rings in a single layer in the basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches if necessary.
Spray the tops of the onion rings lightly with cooking spray. Air fry for 8 to 12 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time. The rings are done when they are golden brown and crisp.
Remove the rings and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
For extra crispiness, you can lightly spray the rings again after flipping them.
If you want a lighter coating, use regular breadcrumbs instead of panko, but panko provides superior crunch.
Do not skip drying the onions after soaking; this is key to preventing sogginess.
