Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine (like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 1 apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 pear, thinly sliced
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 star anise
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (optional)
  • Sparkling water or club soda (for topping)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. In a large pitcher, combine the red wine, apple cider, brandy, and orange liqueur (if using).
  2. Add the sliced apple and pear, cinnamon stick, and star anise to the pitcher.
  3. Stir gently to combine all ingredients.
  4. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. To serve, fill glasses with ice cubes.
  6. Pour the sangria into the glasses, making sure to include some of the fruit.
  7. Top with a splash of sparkling water or club soda.
  8. Garnish with a fresh apple slice or cinnamon stick if desired.

Notes

  • For a sweeter sangria, you can add a tablespoon or two of maple syrup or simple syrup.
  • Feel free to add other fall fruits like cranberries or oranges.
  • If you don’t have brandy, you can substitute with an apple brandy or even a dark rum.
