Make classic, crispy corn dogs at home using this simple recipe for a carnival favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 pound hot dogs or cocktail wieners, patted dry
  • Wooden skewers or lollipop sticks
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and mustard powder.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, milk, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are acceptable. This is your batter.
  4. Insert a wooden skewer into the center of each hot dog, leaving about 4 inches exposed for holding.
  5. Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven. Heat the oil to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature.
  6. Dip a skewered hot dog completely into the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off briefly.
  7. Carefully lower the battered hot dog into the hot oil, holding the stick until the batter sets slightly (about 10 seconds).
  8. Fry 2 to 3 corn dogs at a time, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides, about 3 to 4 minutes. Do not overcrowd the pot.
  9. Remove the cooked corn dogs with tongs and place them on a wire rack set over a baking sheet to drain excess oil.
  10. Serve immediately with your favorite condiments.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, chill the skewered hot dogs in the refrigerator for 15 minutes before dipping them in the batter.
  • If you want mini corn dogs, cut the hot dogs into thirds before skewering.
  • Maintain the oil temperature between 365 and 375 degrees F for the best results.
