Make incredibly tender, juicy BBQ pulled pork using your slow cooker. This set and forget dinner recipe uses a simple rub and is perfect for meal prep or game day crowds.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 lb pork shoulder (Boston butt)
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce (for after shredding)

Instructions

  1. Combine the salt, brown sugar, smoked paprika, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper in a small bowl to create your dry rub.
  2. Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels. Rub the spice mixture evenly over the entire surface of the pork.
  3. Place the seasoned pork shoulder into your slow cooker.
  4. Pour the apple cider vinegar and water around the pork, not directly over the rub.
  5. Cover the crock pot and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours, or on HIGH for 4 to 5 hours, until the pork is fork-tender.
  6. Carefully remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a large cutting board or baking sheet. Discard any large pieces of fat.
  7. Use two forks to shred the pork completely.
  8. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker. Pour your BBQ sauce over the meat and stir well to coat.
  9. Cook on the WARM setting for another 30 minutes to allow the sauce to heat through and soak into the meat.
  10. Serve your BBQ pulled pork piled high on buns for amazing sandwich recipes or use it for easy meal prep protein.

Notes

  • For the juiciest results, aim for an internal temperature of 195°F to 205°F before shredding.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce coating, drain off about half of the liquid from the slow cooker before adding the BBQ sauce back in.
  • This slow cooker pulled pork freezes well for future family dinner ideas.
