Make perfect, golden, fluffy French toast every time with this simple stovetop recipe. This foolproof batter uses basic pantry ingredients and cooks fast, making it ideal for a quick breakfast or easy brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large slices of bread (Texas Toast or Brioche work best)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole milk gives the best texture)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for the griddle

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar until the mixture is fully combined and smooth. This is your foolproof French toast batter.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add half of the butter and let it melt until it sizzles lightly.
  3. Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, letting it soak for about 10 to 15 seconds per side. Do not over-soak, or the bread will fall apart.
  4. Place the soaked bread onto the hot, buttered skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until the French toast is golden brown and cooked through the center.
  5. Remove the cooked slice and keep it warm while you cook the remaining slices, adding more butter to the skillet as needed between batches.
  6. Serve your golden brown French toast immediately with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For extra fluffy French toast, use slightly stale or thick-cut bread like brioche or challah.
  • If you want a richer custard flavor, substitute half of the milk with half-and-half.
  • Serve this classic cinnamon toast with maple syrup and fresh berries for a complete family friendly breakfast.
