Make the classic green bean casserole that everyone loves. This easy side dish uses traditional ingredients for a creamy, comforting flavor perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can French fried onions, divided
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans green beans, drained
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for a richer flavor)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 1.5-quart casserole dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper until smooth.
  3. Stir in the drained green beans and half of the French fried onions into the soup mixture. If you are using cheese, mix it in now.
  4. Spread the mixture evenly into your prepared casserole dish.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes.
  6. Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining half of the French fried onions over the top.
  7. Return the dish to the oven and bake for another 5 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
  8. Let the casserole stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a Southern green bean casserole variation, you can add 1/2 cup of crumbled cooked bacon or 1/4 cup of shredded Monterey Jack cheese along with the cheddar.
  • You can prepare this simple baked side dish up to 24 hours ahead. Cover it and refrigerate, then add 10-15 minutes to the initial covered baking time before adding the topping.
  • If you want to make this green bean casserole from scratch, substitute the canned soup with a homemade mushroom sauce base.
