Cook thick-cut ham steaks quickly on the stovetop with a simple, sweet, and savory honey glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ham steaks (about 3/4 inch thick)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Pat the ham steaks dry with paper towels. This helps create a good sear.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering.
  3. Place the ham steaks in the hot skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side until browned.
  4. While the ham cooks, whisk together the honey, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, and pepper in a small bowl to make the glaze.
  5. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Pour the prepared glaze over the ham steaks in the skillet.
  6. Allow the glaze to simmer and thicken slightly, turning the ham steaks once to coat them completely. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes more, watching closely to prevent the honey from burning.
  7. Remove the ham steaks from the skillet and serve immediately with the remaining pan glaze spooned over the top.

Notes

  • Use ham steaks cut about 3/4 inch thick for best results when pan-frying. Thinner steaks cook too fast and the glaze burns easily.
  • If the glaze starts to darken too quickly, remove the skillet from the heat temporarily while you turn the ham.
  • Serve this ham steak with mashed potatoes or roasted green beans for a complete meal.
