Ingredients
Scale
4 lb pork shoulder (Boston butt), trimmed
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 cup water or chicken broth
1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce (for serving)
Instructions
Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels.
In a small bowl, mix together the salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and brown sugar to create your rub.
Rub the spice mixture evenly over all sides of the pork shoulder.
Place the seasoned pork shoulder into your slow cooker.
Pour the water or broth around the pork, not over the top.
Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours, or on HIGH for 4 to 5 hours, until the pork is very tender and easily shreds with a fork.
Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a large cutting board or platter. Discard any excess fat.
Shred the pork using two forks.
Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and toss it with about half of your favorite BBQ sauce. Let it sit on the WARM setting for 15 minutes to absorb the flavor.
Serve the crockpot pulled pork hot on buns for BBQ pulled pork sandwiches. Save the rest for freezer friendly dinners.
Notes
For the best flavor, use a pork shoulder with a good amount of marbling.
If you prefer a thicker sauce, drain some of the liquid from the slow cooker before adding the BBQ sauce back in.
This recipe makes great meal prep meats; it freezes well for up to three months.
