Make this fresh, homemade spicy mango salsa balancing sweet mango with heat from peppers and tang from lime.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large ripe mangoes, diced
  • 1/2 red onion, finely diced
  • 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced (use more or less for heat preference)
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon lime zest (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Peel and dice the mangoes into small, uniform pieces. Place them in a medium bowl.
  2. Finely dice the red onion and mince the jalapeño. Add these to the bowl with the mango.
  3. Chop the fresh cilantro and add it to the mixture.
  4. Squeeze the lime juice over the ingredients. Add the lime zest, if using, and the salt.
  5. Gently fold all ingredients together until they are evenly combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Taste the salsa. Adjust salt or lime juice as needed. If you want more heat, add a small amount of minced pepper.
  7. Cover the bowl and chill the salsa for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

  • Select mangoes that yield slightly to gentle pressure for the best sweetness and texture.
  • For hotter salsa, leave some seeds in the jalapeño or substitute with a habanero pepper.
  • This salsa pairs well with grilled fish, chicken, pork tacos, or simply with tortilla chips.
