Make impressive, decadent French toast filled with sweet strawberry cream cheese. This recipe guides you through creating a rich filling and cooking the toast to a perfect golden brown.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices thick-cut bread (Texas toast or brioche recommended)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh strawberries
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for cooking

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Mix in the powdered sugar, chopped strawberries, and vanilla extract until just combined. Do not overmix.
  2. Assemble the toast: Take one slice of bread and spread half of the cream cheese mixture evenly over one side. Top with a second slice of bread, forming a sandwich. Repeat with the remaining bread and filling.
  3. Prepare the egg mixture: In a shallow dish, whisk together the milk and eggs until blended. Stir in the cinnamon.
  4. Dip the sandwiches: Quickly dip each stuffed sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides. Allow excess mixture to drip off. Do not soak the bread.
  5. Cook the toast: Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Place two sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until golden brown and the filling is warm. Add more butter as needed for the remaining sandwiches.
  6. Serve immediately with desired toppings.

Notes

  • Use thick bread, at least 3/4 inch thick, to prevent the filling from squeezing out during cooking.
  • For a golden exterior, maintain medium heat; lower heat prevents burning before the center warms.
  • Serve with fresh strawberry slices, a dusting of powdered sugar, and warm maple syrup.
