Make a fresh, creamy, and tangy tartar sauce quickly at home. This simple recipe pairs well with fried fish, shrimp, and crab cakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish, drained
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh dill pickles (or capers)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, chopped dill pickles (or capers), lemon juice, Dijon mustard, parsley, and onion powder.
  2. Stir all ingredients together until they are fully mixed and the sauce is smooth.
  3. Season the sauce with salt and black pepper to your taste.
  4. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the tartar sauce for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to blend.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed before serving with your seafood.

Notes

  • For a sharper flavor, substitute the sweet pickle relish with finely chopped cornichons.
  • If you do not have fresh parsley, you can use 1/2 teaspoon of dried parsley flakes.
  • You can make this sauce up to three days ahead of time and store it covered in the refrigerator.
